My Opinion |
Don’t Bother To Knock
|
While baby-sitting in a
hotel, a beautiful woman (Marilyn Monroe) begins a flirtation with one of the
hotel's guests (Richard Widmark). Rebounding from a break-up with his
girlfriend (Anne Bancroft), he's willingly seduced by the baby-sitter and
ends up in bed with her. When the child wakes up and disturbs them, the
baby-sitter reveals homicidal tendencies and terrorizes them both. A
frightening and provocative exploration of a murderer's mind, Don't Bother To
Knock features a rarely seen, dark side of Marilyn Monroe. |
|
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes |
These glamorous
showgirls have everything a girl could want - except engagement rings! In a
quest for love, Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) and her pal Dorothy (Jane Russell)
set sail on a luxury-liner bound for France. But the pair hits rocky
waters when a manipulative detective, an over-aged, over-sexed millionaire
and the entire men's Olympic team try to put an anchor in their
marriage-minded mischief. It's a wild ride across the Atlantic as our
bathing beauties plan and plot a way to land their men. |
This ranks right up there with Some Like It Hot to me.
Marilyn looks absolutely stunning in this film (I sometimes find myself just
staring at her!), and the movie itself is just so cute. I think they cast
this movie perfectly, especially with Jane Russell as the level-minded half
of the duo. A classic both for Marilyn fans and just in general! |
How to Marry a Millionaire |
Three New York models move into a Manhattan penthouse
apartment and set out to find eligible millionaire bachelors to marry. Two of
the women find a potential candidate, but all three also fall in love with
other men who may not be as financially secure. Each woman now faces a dilemma:
do they choose love or money? |
I think I would have enjoyed this movie a lot more if
Lauren Bacall was not in it. I really do not like her, and during the filming
I heard that Lauren was less than pleasurable towards Marilyn. The plotline
is cute, but it jumps around from model to model and what is going on with
them a little too much for me. However, this is definitely a classic Marilyn
movie that any fan, big or small, must see! |
Niagara |
Set
against the dramatic backdrop of Niagara Falls, Marilyn Monroe portrays Rose,
a femme fatale possessing two of the most powerful weapons; an erotic body
and an evil mind. Planning to murder her troubled husband (Joseph Cotten),
Rose first uses her double-edged sword to drive him to the brink of total
insanity. Then she seductively torments a series of strangers while her
mysterious lover waits in the shadows.
Vastly different from her
often-comedic roles, Marilyn's classic dramatic performance as this
diabolical and scheming woman is at once fascinating and frightening,
painting a powerful portrait of human sexuality and passion. |
This was a superb movie exhibiting Marilyn’s talents as
a dramatic actress. She played her role very well, and this movie was really
a cliffhanger to watch too. There were so many scenes where I literally found
myself on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen; either that
or I was shouting at the tele! This was really Marilyn’s breakout role that got her
name into millions of American homes. You’ll also find that this movie
contains the longest walking scene in movie history. Why? Because that
stellar girl and that stellar figure can pull it off! |
River of No Return |
The title river unites a farmer recently released from
prison, his young son, and an ambitious saloon singer. In order to survive,
each must be purged of anger, and each must learn to understand and care for
the others. |
This movie was okay in my mind; I’m not a big fan of
westerns at all and it has always been a personal bias of mine in regards to
whether or not I enjoy a movie. I would rather not poison the experience of
this movie for you because of that. Sorry! |
Some Like It Hot |
Two Struggling musicians witness the St. Valentine's Day
Massacre and try to find a way out of the city before they are found and
killed by the mob. The only job that will pay their way is an all girl band
so the two dress up as women. In addition to hiding, each has his own
problems; One falls for another band member but can't tell her his gender,
and the other has a rich suitor who will not take "No," for an
answer. |
This was my favourite movie of hers, she was absolutely
stellar! I must watch this at least once a week J
Each time I see it I still laugh, and there is no way you can’t enjoy the
performances given by all involved. This was AFI’s top comedy for a reason,
believe me! By this time Marilyn had begun drinking heavily and developing an
addiction to alcohol, and you can see its effects on her appearance and her
weight in this movie. She still looks wonderful, however, and this is
definitely a classic and A+ Marilyn movie! |
The Asphalt Jungle |
When criminal mastermind Doc
Riedenscheider is released from prison, he approaches lawyer Alonzo Emmerich
with a plan for the biggest jewel heist in history. Emmerich not only gives
Doc the needed expense money, but also offers to fence the jewels as well. Doc
carefully rehearses the seemingly fail-safe plan with his team of crooks, but
Emmerich has a shady, double-crossing plan of his own. |

There’s No Business Like Show Business |
An all-star cast sparks this
tuneful Irving Berlin musical that depicts the trials and triumphs of a
veteran vaudeville family. Molly (Ethel Merman) and Terry (Dan Dailey)
Donahue start out as a duo and keep adding kids to the act until they finally
become The Five Donahues. Their busy, sometimes tumultuous lives aren't
always easy, but the Donahues have plenty of love to get them through the
hard times and more than enough talent to keep them on top. Highlighted by
one classic Irving Berlin song after another and an array of dazzling
production numbers, this upbeat, utterly delightful tale of life on the stage
proves beyond a doubt that there's no business like show business. |
I have heard that a lot of people thought this movie was
cheap and corny and yadda yadda yadda, but I really enjoyed this movie, and I
thought it was cute. The singing and dancing is absolutely out of this world
in this movie, and the costumes are great. I like to watch this movie, even
despite the fact that Ethel Merman has a starring role here (Her voice
irritates me more than I could ever tell you lol). My favourite vocal
performance she has ever done is in this movie – Heat Wave! |
The Prince and the Showgirl |
When a dazzling American
showgirl captures the monocled eye of a debonair European prince, it's clear
proof that opposites attract. And who could be more attractive opposites than
luminous movie legend Marilyn Monroe and England's incomparably gifted actor
Lawerence Olivier. He's His Highness Grand Duke Charles, Regent of the Balkan
state of Carpathia, an arrogant stuffed shirt who comes to London for the
1911 coronation of King George V. She's Elsie Marina of Milwaukee, short on
the social graces but long on common sense, who's come to London on a
3rd-blonde-from-the-left Gaiety Girl. Beset by political woes portending the
coming war in Europe, Charles seeks escape in a short-term dalliance with the
tantalizing Elsie. Elsie is also interested in affairs - affairs of state.
And when it comes to a showdown between Yankee ingenuity and the Balkan
bigwigs out to topple Charles, guess who wins? |
|
The Seven Year Itch |
Like many other Manhattan husbands, Richard Sherman
sends his wife and son to the country for the summer, while he stays behind
to toil. Though reveling in temporary bachelor freedom of lifestyle, he's
resolved not to carouse and philander like some others. But his overactive,
over-vivid imagination goes into overdrive when a delightfully
unconventional, voluptuous blonde moves in upstairs |
I loved this film, I found this to be the second
funniest of all of her films (Some Like It Hot is the first). She looks
absolutely fantastic here; as we all know, the most famous scene of her that
everyone recognizes even to this day is in this movie. Being a history major
in college, I can see how this movie clearly demonstrates the feelings of the
middle class male during the 1950s with regards to their sexuality and
dealing with the women around them. Just the complete geek in me! An absolute must for Marilyn fans! |
We’re Not Married |
A bumbling justice-of-the-peace performs several illegal
marriages. Thirty months later, he discovers his mistake and five couples
must deal with the news that they're not married. Included: Ramona and Steve,
who loathe each other but married to get a lucrative radio contract; the
winner of the Mrs. Mississippi pageant; a couple who barely speak, while the
husband dreams of former flames; an oil tycoon and a gold-digger after his
wealth; and soldier Willie Fisher, about to ship out to the Korean War leaving
his gorgeous spouse pregnant. |
|
Bus Stop |
Innocent rodeo cowboy Bo falls in love with cafe singer
Cherie in Phoenix. She tries to run away to Los Angeles but he finds her and
forces her to board the bus to his home in Montana. When the bus stops at
Grace's Diner the passengers learn that the road ahead is blocked. By now
everyone knows of the kidnapping, but Bo is determined to have Cherie |
I thought this movie was okay. It was a great new role
for Marilyn, and she really took the dramatic role well. It is definitely not
one of my favourites of hers, however. It seems like she wanted to prove that
she could indeed take on a serious role to prove to those out there who
scoffed at her abilities during the apex of her career and who didn’t care
enough to expend some energy to view movies of hers like “Niagara” and “Don’t
Bother to Knock”. I don’t think she looked her best in this movie, either,
probably due to that mass of baby powder she had to pile on her face! |
The Misfits |
Roslyn is a very beautiful woman who just got divorced.
She meets two friends, Guido and Gay, who take her to Guido's house in the
country, to relax and forget the difficulties of the past few weeks.
Everything is fine at first, but soon the two men fall in love with Roslyn,
and start showing some bad aspects of their characters. Soon they meet
another friend of Gay's and the four of them go to hunt some wild horses.
This is when things just... explode! |
|
All About Eve |
Aspiring actress Eve Harrington maneuvers her way into
the lives of Broadway star Margo Channing, playwright Lloyd Richards and
director Bill Sampson. This classic story of ambition and betrayal has become
part of American folklore. Bette Davis claims to have based her character on
the persona of film actress Talullah Bankhead. Davis' line "Fasten your
seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night" is legendary, but, in fact,
all of the film's dialog sparkles with equal brilliance. |
This was a fantastic movie; a classic for Marilyn fans
and for all movie fans to see. The acting, dialogue, stars, and just about
everything else make this a legendary movie and well worth viewing as an
introduction to Marilyn’s early works. |
As Young As You Feel |
